After this mornings pleasant sail on the estuary at Newburgh, I was keen
for some more. Had discovered the beach at St Fergus when visiting friends
over new year and we went to walk their dog. At the time I thought it would
work well in a SE, and the access is great - no massive walk over mountains
of sand dunes. Met up with Rob at low tide and the conditions were fairly
constant 20 mph from the right, dead cross shore. The waves were quite
meaty (10 to 12 foot) out the back, but further inshore they were maybe 3
or four feet. As it was the first time either of us had sailed here, we
were being fairly cautious, and I didn't try to get out the back as these
conditions were bigger than anything I had sailed before, although I was
enjoying myself closer to the shore, with a few reasonable jumps and wave
rides. After about an hour, Rob decided to venture further out, but as the
wind was dropping, he wasn't really planing, and hit a big lull and
promptly got a big one on the head. His sail was shredded in several
places, and both arms of the boom were snapped as well. He made it to the
shore OK though, and we decided to call it a day after that. We will
definately be coming here again - we just need to suss it out a bit more to
work out the best wind direction / tide states, etc. Was really nice to do
a bit of exploring, and find a potentially good wave location only 20
minutes drive from home. Brilliant fun. Even got a cup of tea and some
Christmas cake when we dropped in to visit my friends who showed me the
beach at New Year.
